Telescope Carrying Case for Meade LX 10"

Meade LX50 10", LX90 10", LX90-ACF 10", LX90GPS 10", LX100 10", LX200 10" (non-GPS), LX200-ACF 10"*, LX200GPS 10", LX200R 10"  (This case is NOT compatible with any of the new LX600 series telescopes.)

* Beginning in 2013, Meade modified the LX200 10" ACF Telescope so that it could no longer be positioned with the optical tube pointing straight down between the forks.  The tube can only be stored in the nose-up position.  This makes it more difficult to transport and also makes it incompatible with any JMI Carrying Case.  The telescope was re-designed sometime in the fall of 2014.  At this time we have no plans to produce a case for the nose-up-storage design.

The case includes four latches (two lockable), three steel-reinforced handles, a 2" by 30" steel hinge and die-cut foam lining with compartments for telescope, eyepieces, finder scope and accessories.  The finder scope must be removed from the telescope and placed in a special vinyl cover included with the case.  The Meade Microfocuser on the GPS scope must also be removed and placed in a foam compartment in the case.  Three thumbscrews are provided to replace the focuser's original mounting setscrews, for easy removal and reinstallation.  The case can be carried or pulled using the attached wheels.  Optional upgrades include the Large-Wheel Upgrade and Retractable Handle Upgrade (best if installed at time of purchase).

When used for the Meade LX90, the LNT Module and SmartFinder must be removed and stored in the case.  An adapter bracket is included (see below) for instant accurate repositioning when attaching the LNT Module.

Outside dimensions of the case are approximately 36-5/8" x 24-3/4" x 16-5/8" and its empty weight is approximately 23.2 lbs.  The shipping box is approximately 26-1/4" x 19-3/8" x 38-3/8" (FedEx Ground dimensional weight is 114 lbs) and the shipping weight is approximately 31.4 lbs.  All values are subject to slight changes.

See the Case Comparison Chart.

NOTE

Our carrying cases are manufactured with die-cut foam to hold the telescope as securely as possible.  They can, however, be used for telescopes other than those for which they were designed.  The following information is provided to help you make a decision about purchasing a case for telescopes not listed above:

The following fork-mounted telescopes should fit inside the CASELX10 with a small amount of space between the fork arms and the foam.

Most 10" Fork-Mounted SCTs including Meade 2120, 10" LX2 through LX10 and Ultima 9-1/4"

The optical tube of Celestron and Meade 10" German Equatorial SCTs will fit inside the CASELX10 loosely with extra padding needed to take up extra space, especially at one or both ends of the optical tube.

The case includes six latches (four lockable) for the removable cover (no hinge), two folding handle bars, four steel-reinforced handles and die-cut foam lining with compartments for telescope, eyepieces, finder scope (must be removed from the telescope and placed in a special vinyl cover included with the case) and accessories.  The focuser does not need to be removed before installation.  The top of the case is not hinged.  It is removed completely to insert or remove the telescope.  The case is designed to be maneuvered like a wheelbarrow with the two retractable handle bars and two 10" pneumatic wheels.  Installation of the wheels and support rails is easy and requires two 7/16" wrenches (or two crescent wrenches).  This case is compatible with Peterson ergonomic Get-A-Grip handles.

Outside dimensions of the case are approximately 51-5/8" x 24-7/8" x 19" (with wheels installed and handle bars retracted) and its empty weight is approximately 44.0 lbs.  The shipping box is approximately 43-5/8" x 14-7/8" x 25-3/4" (FedEx Ground dimensional weight is 104 lbs) and the shipping weight is approximately 49.4 lbs.  All values are subject to slight changes.

NOTE

The foam for this case is manufactured with pre-cut removable strips to convert the cavity configuration from the NexStar Single Fork Arm shape, the LX90 shape to the LX50/100/200 shape.  WARNING:  Read the instructions carefully to determine which foam pieces to remove.  If you remove the incorrect pieces, they will have to be glued back in place.

Our carrying cases are manufactured with exact-fit die-cut foam to hold the telescope as securely as possible.  They can, however, be used for telescopes other than those for which they were designed.  The following information is provided to help you make a decision about purchasing a case for telescopes not listed above:

The following fork-mounted telescopes should fit inside the CASEX8 with a small amount of space between the fork arms and the foam.

Celestron C8 / C8+ / Celestar 8 Deluxe / Powerstar 8 / Fastar 8 (both Original Version with non-tapered Celestar 8 style fork arms and Newer Version with tapered Ultima 9-1/4" style fork arms), Meade 2080 / 8" LX2 through LX10 / Ultima 8

Counterweight Caddy for German Equatorial Counterweights

Celestron German Equatorial mounts; iOptron iEQ30; Meade German Equatorial mounts; Orion German Equatorial mounts

The Counterweight Caddy simplifies transportation of one to three counterweights included with most German Equatorial mounts by containing them in a steel support with a carrying handle.  It will accommodate any counterweights up to 4.75" diameter, 0.8" minimum center-hole diameter and 6.25" total thickness of all counterweights.  Three replacement thumbscrews are included for the Meade LXD55 / LXD75 counterweights because the original locking thumbscrews tend to break easily.

Large-Wheel Upgrade for Telescope Carrying Cases

JMI Carrying Case models (Celestron) CASE14OTA*, CASENEX8S, CASENEX8D, CASENEX11; (JMI) CASERB66; (Meade) CASELX8, CASELX10, CASELX208G, CASELX210G, CASELX212G (old style with small wheels), CASEX8, CASE55OTA

Add large 10" all-terrain pneumatic wheels to your telescope carrying case to improve travel over rough surfaces.  The upgrade can be purchased at the time you purchase the case or at a later date.  You will be required to drill six holes in the case if you are attaching an after-purchase upgrade.

The wheels can quickly and easily be removed from the axels on the bracket by pulling two spring clip pins.  This will help reduce the overall size of the case for placing it in a small space such as a trunk.  The whole assembly (wheels and bracket) can be removed in order to use the smaller standard wheels (on the 8" through 11" telescope cases).

When installed, the wheels add 2" of depth, measuring from the bottom of the case (not including the small standard wheels), and 10-1/2" to 11-1/2" of length, measuring from the end of the case where the bracket is attached.  If the wheels are removed from the bracket, the above dimensions can be reduced by approximately 4-1/2" each.  Due to the contoured shape of the carrying cases, actual changes in the overall length of the case will be less and will depend on the model.

Shipping weight is approximately 13.8 lbs.

* For a CASE14OTA manufactured before 2011, send pictures to verify compatibility with after-market upgrade.

NOTE

Some of our old cases, for the Celestron NexStar 11 and Meade LX200 10" telescopes, used metal brackets for mounting the integral wheels.  A modified bracket may be necessary, at no charge, to accommodate the shape of these older cases.  Call for details.

Each wheel is quickly and easily removed from the mounting bracket by pulling the spring clip type pin (technically a hair pin cotter pin or hitch pin cotter pin).

This picture shows all the hardware which comes with the Large Wheel Upgrade.

Retractable-Handle Upgrade for Telescope Carrying Cases

Luggage-Style Retractable Handle

JMI All JMI Carrying Case models where wheels are included except the following (due to the size and weight of the telescope*): CASELX10, CASECPC11, CASE14OTA, CASELX12R10 and CASELX14R12.

* NOTE:  Use the Wheelbarrow-Style Retractable Handle (below) for heavier scopes.

Add a luggage-style retractable handle bar to increase maneuverability.  The telescoping handle slides in to reduce the space necessary for storage and transportation.  The upgrade can be purchased at the time you purchase the case or at a later date.  The after-market installation is easy.  It requires drilling four (4) holes in the case with a 3/16" bit.  A template is provided for lining up the holes in the case.  A hex wrench (provided) and a 5/16" wrench are also required.

Shipping weight is approximately 2.6 lbs.

Add two wheelbarrow-style retractable handle bars to increase maneuverability with large, heavy scopes.  The handles fold in next to the base of the case to reduce the space necessary for storage and transportation.  The upgrade can be purchased at the time you purchase the case or at a later date.  The after-market installation is easy.  It requires a drill with a 1/4" bit for drilling eight mounting holes and appropriate wrenches (two crescent wrenches or two 7/16" and two 9/16" wrenches) for mounting the hardware on the case.

Shipping weight is approximately 6.2 lbs.

JMI has a complete line of Carrying Cases for various telescopes.  Note the die-cut foam, used to protect the telescope, shown in the foreground of the picture.
Our carrying cases can often be used for telescopes other than the ones for which they were designed.  In this picture we have a obsolete case for the Meade LX200GPS 10" being used to store and transport a Meade LX200 7" Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope.  (NOTE:  We now have a case specifically designed for the Meade LX200 7" Mak-Cas.)
Our carrying cases can often be used for telescopes other than the ones for which they were designed.  In this picture we have a case (old version) for the 8" Meade LX90 being used to store and transport a 6" Celestron C150-HD optical tube.  The LX90 foam has a section at one end that is pre-cut and easy to remove for longer optical tubes (up to 26 inches).
JMI's Production Manager completes a test.  Notice where he is putting his head.  Now that is real faith in your product!  The same case was used for this picture and the three below.  There were no scratches, dents or any other damage done to the case during these experiments.

Compare the foam crush test on another manufacturer's case (left) vs. JMI's (right).  As you can see, the JMI foam withstands more than three times the weight of the competition's.  JMI's foam will take more than the 18 pounds shown in the picture (each 6-1/2" diameter disk weighs 6 lbs.) but we only had three weights available at the time this picture was taken.

What is a JMI Carrying Case?

JMI Carrying Cases include crush-resistant die-cut foam contoured to safely hold your telescope during transport.  The larger cases are manufactured by JMI with 1/4" plastic for super-strong but light-weight support.  Most cases include an extra handle on one end with wheels on the opposite end for easily maneuvering the case without lifting the entire weight.  These attractive and efficiently-designed cases are substantially smaller than the original shipping box and even smaller than most soft cases.  They protect your investment while making it easier to move your scope from one location to another.

Customer Comments

"This will be my 9th JMI case purchase!  ...  [I] Absolutely love these cases...."  (B. L.  07/14/16)

"A couple of years ago I bought your case for my 10" Meade LX200 scope.  The case has been absolutely fantastic!  It is one of the best purchases I ever made and worth every penny.  My wife then bought me your Large Wheel upgrade kit, and that has been absolutely AWESOME!!  I always have to carry my scope from the car to observing sites over uneven and tough  terrain, and the Large Wheels make it so incredibly easier, I can't think of owning a case without them, frankly....  Thank you for making such great products!"  (A. D.  01/02/2015)

"The case arrived this afternoon.  I'm well pleased not only with the quality, but also for your service.  [I] can't praise you all enough!!!!  Many thanks.  ...import duty and VAT weren't too bad either."  (G. B.  11/21/2013)

"I just purchased your CASELX10 for my Meade LX200 10in GPS scope.  [It is] unbelievably strong and robust!  As an engineer, I appreciate the design elements.  I now have no worries of my scope getting damaged during storage or travel to a dark sky site.  [It is] well worth the price....why store a $4000 scope in it's corrugated box, and risk damage when the box degrades???  Thanks for a great product."  (R. M.)

"I am very pleased with my [JMI] telescope cases and the service you provided.  Thank you very much.  (J. J. W.)

"I called on very short notice and wanted a 'CASELX8'...  The case arrived in time in perfect condition and was exactly what I needed.  It made my star party weekend possible and in my opinion the attitude and willingness to help on the part of your employee was exemplary!  I cannot thank you enough for making such a wonderful product but also I feel that I can't thank your employee enough for going out of his way to help!"  (D. P.)

"My Celestron Nexstar 6SE Case (CASENEX6) arrived exactly as stated by the representative of your company!  Thank you for manufacturing a product to house my delicate Celestron Telescope"  (R. T.)

"No matter where we are, I don't have to think twice about how safe and secure my telescope [is] while living snuggly inside of its lovely [JMI] hard case.  Your case has lived up to my spec's and surpassed them by miles.  ...I've never had to fear any damage to my telescope while bouncing down some of the lovely roads this country has to offer, as long as [its] inside its case....  I live in the desert [and] I know all about dust and dirt.  Your case locks out the dust and dirt.  I'm impressed.  I'm very impressed.  Thanks for a wonderful product."  (D. L.)

"Just a quick not to let you know the case has arrived...  What a great product."  (P. D.)

"I waited for this case [to be designed for] a long time and almost gave up hope.  It's expensive, but nice, very very nice.  Thanks Guys."  (A. J. G.)

"I just wanted to tell you that I had a car accident yesterday with my 11" Celestron CGE GoTo scope packed in my minivan.  It was in one of your cases.  I ran a red light and was broad-sided.  My van was quite damaged and the contents took a serious beating.  I had three optics cases that were destroyed (though the optics were okay) and I was heartsick over my poor husband's big scope.  We got it home and opened the case and found that not only was the scope perfectly fine, it seems to still be in reasonable alignment.  It probably needs a collimation but it is in all other respects a happy, healthy telescope!  The case is 100% intact as well.  I just want to thank you so much for protecting our investment and would like you to use my letter if you'd like.  Thanks again."  (Diane North)

"I am very pleased with both of the cases and would recommend JMI cases to anyone."  (G. E.)

"[I] received my tripod case yesterday.  Wow, what terrific quality products you guys make.  I'm very impressed."  (D A. F.)

"As for the case, the fit is perfect.  I will not hesitate again to take my telescope anywhere.  It exceeded my expectations."  (F. L. A.)

"...a great asset for a large investment."  (R. F.)

"First let me thank you for the telescope case I recently purchased.  It is all you said it was...."  (R. S.)

"The telescope case was everything I expected.  it is extremely high quality.  I wondered why the wheel kit was so expensive until I received it.  The wheels and frame are stronger than those on my wheelbarrow!  The entire kit is built so strong that after the nuclear war it will be cockroaches and my wheel kit left.  I'm very pleased with the entire experience.  You make a quality product.  I know my telescope is well protected now.  Whenever I need something for my scope I will look to JMI first.  (H. L.)

"International delivery took just over one week.  Very pleased with the product - much better than buying a plastic box and trying to find the foam to fit - very secure fit and easy to carry."  (N. D.)

"FYI, your cases have great write-ups here in Australia."  (J. C.)

"First things first:  I am impressed and grateful for the level of support you have shown in this matter.  I am new to astronomy and will not forget your help when considering future purchases.  Nor will I hesitate to recommend JMI products to others."  (C. R.)

"I own one of your hard cases for my NexStar 11 and absolutely love it!  My dark sites bring me to sometimes hard-to-get-to places in the Mojave desert and surrounding mountains, often on rough 4WD trails.  The scope stays perfectly protected in your case....  I like [your foam] because it is very firm yet resilient and doesn't shed material."  (C. E.)

"After rearranging, cutting and gluing some of the foam, the case [for the Meade LXD75 SN-8/SN-10 OTA] fits my TEC f/12 Mak-Cas and finder scope very well.  See the attached Picture.  The finder scope compartment foam is cut in a wedge shape so that the finder scope is held securely in place and will not fall out when the lid is closed.  It is also covered by a removable foam section that also supports the upper half of the back of the tube (the foam section is shown resting on the side of the case in the picture).  ...  I knew I would have to make some modifications to it when I ordered the case but it all worked out very well.  Even the extra space on the case, meant for the side focuser of the Schmidt-Newtonian, is a plus as it provides room for me to put my arm and place my hand under the tube to lift the scope out of the case.  I am very happy with the case as it provides excellent protection for my scope in a compact and easily transportable package.  Thanks."  (George Edwards)

"I recently purchased your NexStar 9.25/11 case ... and I'm loving it!  It's the best made scope case I've ever seen --- even my wife (who is not really into astronomy) was impressed!  Congratulations on a job well done!"  (K. T.)

"...Loved the [12" LX200] case from the moment I saw it.  Great build quality and finish."  (B. M.)

"Just purchased your case for my NexStar GPS 11 and I love it!  Can't imagine trying to transport that monster any other way!  ...  was a perfect fit for the scope  ...  Nice to know I could accidentally park a VW on top of it and still have an intact telescope!  Thanks so much for your great products."  (D. B.)

"You guys are great!  Thanks to your case for my 12" SCT, I will get it out more and be assured it's protected.  Thanks for the prompt replies to info requests and thanks for everything.  Happy 20th year!"  (C. E. B.)

"...the case for the equatorial head on my LXD55 arrived today.  I am REALLY delighted with it.  The quality of your product is excellent. ... Thank you once again and I must say your service has been very impressive.  Kind regards,"  (B. W.)

"...  By the way, I do have your Celestron Nexstar 8 GPS case, it is fantastic!!  Why would I go with any other manufacturer?"  (D. C.)

"I bought a JMI case for my N11 GPS about a year ago and I love it!  ...very well collimated.  I haul my N11 everywhere, at first in the front seat of my VW Passat and now in my Tahoe.  There's no doubt that getting the JMI case has helped keep my collimation—it's a great case, well worth the $$.  If you need an endorsement, feel free to use my name or quote me!  I have referred several N11 owners as well as other large scope owners to JMI."  (Mark Orsatti)

"I just wanted to drop you a note and say how impressed I am with my new case [for the Meade 8 GPS].  I was very surprised to find an additional soft cover for both the finder scope and the hand controller.  Also, the additional cutout for the zero-image-shift focuser is a real god send.  There is nothing harder than trying to disassemble the focuser from the rear of the tube in the dark.  Your additional cutout makes that additional step unnecessary.  I have recommended your case to several others at work and (told them) how well it was thought out and assembled.  Keep up the good work."  (J. T.)

"...The case [for the LX200GPS 10"] did take some punishment (typical scratches), was knocked over accidentally (with the scope in it), dragged over dirt/gravel terrain to some remote sites and the usual lugging from my apartment up/down stairs to my SUV parked outside ... but in spite of all this punishment, the scope remained undamaged and I still haven't the need to collimate the secondary lens since purchasing your product!  ...  Your case has held up to all punishment and I am greatly pleased and impressed with your product.  I have recommended it to others in the club..."  (M. H.)

"I have your case for the (LX90) 'scope — it has done a tremendous job protecting it, including air travel."  (R. E.)

"I just wanted to let you guys know that this case is the best accessory I have ever purchased for my telescope.  After trying to move my telescope from place to place in a 'soft case' I am wondering what took me so long to order this case.  It's absolutely fantastic!  I use a Jetta to move my equipment around and have stayed away from hard cases since they are generally larger than a soft case.  Even a 1/2 inch increase in size would make it too large to fit in the Jetta.  I took a chance based on your photo and tried to estimate the size of the case.  It turns out, this case is smaller than my soft case, enough that I can now put the scope in the trunk of the Jetta.  [It is] much easier to move and much smaller — great selling points!  Anyway, great product!  Thanks!  (PS — And yes, feel free to use this as a reference.  It's really worth the money.)"  (Dave Arruda)

"I just received my NexStar 11 GPS case today.  It's wonderful!  The scope fits perfectly.  The case design is very well thought out.  I am also impressed with the quality of materials and workmanship.  The case is definitely on par with everything else I've purchased from you guys.  I live in a heavily light-polluted area and have to transport my scope and gear to a dark-sky location for any serious observing.  This case has increased the ease, as well as my comfort level of transporting the scope."  (C. G.)

"My NexStar 8 is safely packed in its new case.  As we say in Australia, ...'It's a Beauty!!'  I have no doubt that my astronomical friends will be very envious."  (T. V.)

"I just received the case for my ETX-125 and am very pleased with the quality of it.  Thanks for the excellent, prompt service..."  (Unknown)

"I received my case this week and was very pleasantly surprised at its quality and design.  ...what I received has certainly exceeded my fondest wishes."  (J. B. C.)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. What are the advantages of your cases over other carrying cases on the market?
A. Our precut foam is stiffer than that used in many others cases.  We also include cut-outs for accessories in the top as well as the bottom half of the case.  Of course, the hard case protects your investment better and is easier to handle than a soft case.  Believe it or not, in many cases (no pun intended) our hard case is smaller than the available soft cases.  And finally, all of our larger cases have wheels so you don't have to carry them.

Q. Do you recommend using a JMI carrying case for airline travel?
A. Many customers have used our carrying cases for airline travel and have given us very positive feedback.  If you choose to use a JMI case for travel, please note the following:
  • Place the telescope securely in the case.
  • Either lock the case with a set of keys secured to the outside of the case or leave the case unlocked, allowing for airline inspection.  (It has been reported that the airlines have standard case keys to open most cases for inspection.)
  • It is a good idea to place the carrying case in the original shipping box with added padding.
  • Cut a hole in the top of the original shipping box allowing access to the carrying case handle (click on picture at right).
  • Attach a business card or some other form of ID showing your name, address and phone number.
  • Most carrying cases, due to their size, will have to be treated as checked baggage.
  • Some of our cases are close to, but slightly over, the carry-on size limits.  It is ultimately up to the airline whether or not they will accept the case as carry-on baggage.

We are not responsible for damage to your case or telescope equipment.
